Noticed something new on campus after winter break? New recycling signage was installed throughout campus, in order to make the recycling system very simple and user-friendly. The snazzy new look to UMD recycling was led by some dedicated UMD students. Last spring, MPIRG students and a group of cultural anthropology seniors identified the need for better recycling instructions. Ashley Minnerath (CLA, ‘09 and student UMD Sustainability Committee member) took action. She and Jordan Cataldo (Science/Eng and FM student employee) inventoried recycling bins, took photos, and proposed signage. Jane Ollila (Fine Arts) created the UMD Sustainability logo, and Jilly Jenkins (Fine Arts, '09) put together the graphic design of the final stickers.
Wondering what to do with your bottle? All bottles and cans can be recycled in a single barrel, which is called a co-mingled stream. Things which belong in these bins:
*All plastics with a recycling symbol
*Aluminum Cans
*Tin Cans
*Plastic Bottles
*Glass Bottles
Paper is also considered co-mingled. All of these paper products may be recycled on campus in paper recycling bins:
*Office Mix
*Cardboard
*Catalogs
*Magazines
*Paperback Books
The stickers will also put on the outdoor Big Belly Solar Trash Compactors, once it warms up, as a reminder to recycle.
Continue the campus effort by placing your recyclables in the proper bin. Sometimes items can be difficult to decide what to do with. Recently a question surfaced regarding whether or not these plastic pipette boxes (shown below) can be recycled-good news is that yes, they can be recycled! If you have these in your office, remember to first reduce, then reuse, and as a last resort recycle!
